The Electricity Control Board (ECB) on Friday provided an update on the ongoing issue of prepaid electricity meter blocking by local authorities due to non-payment of other municipal services.
ECB Chief Executive Robert Kahimise said in a previous statement and social media post, the ECB clarified that such practices contravene the Electricity Act, No. 4 of 2007, and its associated regulations.
However, a recent legal challenge has temporarily restricted the ECB from taking action against licensees involved in this practice.
While the legal proceedings are underway, the ECB is unable to investigate complaints regarding meter blocking. The regulator assures the public that it remains committed to its mandate and will promptly inform the public of the outcome of the legal proceedings and any subsequent actions, he said.
“In the meantime, aggrieved customers are urged to make appropriate arrangements with local authorities regarding payment of their municipal bill arrears,” he said.
