Four killed in separate road accidents over weekend

Namibian Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says four people died in separate road accidents across the country over the weekend.

Shikwambi announced this in the weekend crime report, released on Sunday afternoon.

In Windhoek, a motorcycle collision claimed the life of a man on Friday afternoon.

According to Shikwambi, the incident occurred at around 15h30 on Robert Mugabe Avenue, when a four-tonne truck reportedly hit a motorcycle, causing it to collide with other stationary vehicles.

According to the police, the motorcyclist, identified as Romario Tony Pienaar (26), died at the scene.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing, and Pienaar’s next of kin have been informed.

Later that day at Ondangwa, a pedestrian lost his life after he was struck by a car.

The accident happened at around 19h00 on the main road between Onethindi and Ondangwa, when a vehicle hit George Hamukonda (28) as he attempted to cross the road.

“Hamukonda died on the scene. His next of kin have been notified and police investigations continue,” said Shikwambi.

Another fatal accident was reported at Orutjandja, Opuwo, at around 20h30 on Friday, when a pedestrian, identified as Ngaveutohambo

Muharukua, was killed after being hit by a car while walking alongside the road.

According to Shikwambi, the driver allegedly failed to ascertain the extent of Muharukua’s injuries.

“The victim died on the spot, and the investigation remains ongoing,” said Shikwambi.
Muharukua’s next of kin have been informed.

On Saturday night, a rollover accident near Warmbad claimed the life of a man.

The incident occurred around 22h30, approximately 30km from Karasburg on the road to Warmbad.

Shikwambi said the deceased, identified as Gert Appolus (59), lost control of his vehicle, causing it to overturn.

Appolus sustained severe injuries, including to his right leg and left eye. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Windhoek, said Shikwambi.

“His next of kin have been notified, and police are continuing their investigation,” she added.
