CARL Hermann Gustav Schlettwein, Namibia’s Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, currently attending the meeting of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome, Italy, has emphasized that the drought in Namibia is a critical issue requiring urgent and serious interventions.
Speaking during the opening session on Monday, Schlettwein said that funding water projects would significantly alleviate the scarcity of water resources in the country, ensuring tangible development for Namibia as a whole.
He highlighted the importance of water as a vital resource in all aspects of human life and urged increased investment in water projects, emphasizing the need to prioritize such funding “instead of funding wars.”
The WFP’s Country Strategic Plan for Namibia for 2025–2029 will be presented to the Executive Board for approval on Thursday. Various government ministries contributed significantly to the finalization of the Strategic Plan.
The WFP, a United Nations agency, aims to deliver transformative support aligned with Namibia’s goal of eradicating poverty and hunger, while also fostering a healthy and food-secure nation. Additionally, the WFP seeks to strengthen systems, particularly those governing food security, social protection, and emergency preparedness, ensuring that the most at-risk populations are effectively reached.
The global meeting began on Monday and will conclude on Friday.
