NDP Celebrates Election Victory in Katima Mulilo

Katima Mulilo, 23 December 2024 – The National Democratic Party (NDP) celebrated its election victory in Katima Mulilo yesterday after securing one seat in the National Assembly. Supporters and sympathizers gathered at Kamunu Village Hall to mark the occasion, with various traditional groups performing at the vibrant event.

Speaking at the celebration, NDP President Lukato Lukato expressed his gratitude to everyone who voted for or supported the party during the 2024 general elections. “The trust you have bestowed upon me is a precious gift and a privilege to represent you in Parliament,” Lukato told the crowd, who cheered and applauded. He assured the audience that he would not disappoint, pledging to deliver on his promises. Lukato also announced that the NDP would not join other political parties in challenging the election results.

NDP Secretary-General Lifumbela Linyando also addressed the gathering, describing the single seat the party secured as a “strong foundation” for future growth. He said the party would now focus on establishing branches at the district, constituency, and regional levels, aiming to build a nationwide presence. Linyando also revealed plans to formally request the Katima Mulilo Town Council to name a street after President Lukato Lukato, citing his perseverance, courage, and commitment to serving the people.

However, Linyando did not shy away from criticizing the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). He described the election process as poorly managed, citing the shortage of ballot papers, the extension of election days into the night, and delays in announcing results. He argued that these issues demonstrated the ECN’s lack of preparedness. Despite this, Linyando added that the NDP had decided to “let bygones be bygones” due to the high costs of re-running an election.

Linyando also called on Namibian President Hage Geingob to consider firing the entire management of the ECN, as he believed the commission was not fit for the task.

The NDP, which had been in the political wilderness for more than two decades, has finally gained public sympathy and trust. With their single parliamentary seat, the party hopes to deliver results and meet the expectations of its electorate. -Namibia Daily News
