Acupuncture is a Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific parts of the body.
According to scientific research, the procedure restores balance to the body’s energy flow as well as stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue.
Among other health issues, acupuncture treats chronic pain, stress, digestive problems, and allergies.
The Deputy Chief Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Huang Qin, says the procedure is safe when performed by a qualified practitioner and has almost no side effects.
“Acupuncture can cure many kinds of diseases. In China, we use acupuncture to treat more than 4,000 kinds of diseases, and in the world, it is very useful and effective in treating diseases and pain, like neck pain, back pain, lower back pain, and any other disease that has symptoms of pain.”
Huang says that his medical team has been using the procedure for the past 28 years and is treating hundreds of patients daily.
The procedure lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes based on the condition of the patient and does not cause any pain or discomfort.
“I want to introduce the Chinese medical culture, including acupuncture and medical massage, to them. They are very interested in this, and the patients can introduce themselves to each other, to their neighbours, to their parents, and to their doctors. Like me, I also want to introduce the culture and the techniques to Namibian people.”
The procedure is free of charge at the Katutura Hospital.
