ON Thursday morning, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, Albert Kawana, inaugurated the Nkurenkuru Police Station in Kavango West.
Among the dignitaries attending the event were Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant Joseph Shikongo, as well as retired former general of the Namibian Police Force, Sebastian Ndeitunga, and other senior members of the force.
Addressing the gathering, Kawana highlighted that the Namibian Police Force has showcased remarkable strength and competence in both its operational and administrative endeavours. This achievement has been accomplished through the implementation of inclusivity principles in its recruitment and operational structures, with the ultimate goal of establishing a formidable police force that truly reflects and serves all communities.
Kawana provided illustrations regarding the recent police recruitment process, emphasizing that in all 14 regions of the country, a minimum of 80% of the recruits are from the local indigenous population of that respective region. The remaining 20% is allocated to other communities, contributing to the development of a national police force instead of a purely tribal-based one.
“There is a perception that the police force is dominated by Oshiwambo speakers. I want to disqualify that notion. Out of 14 regional commanders, 9 are not from Oshiwambo-speaking communities. I am also pleased to share that 40% of the police in management positions are women, leading teams of men. We take great pride in promoting the principle of inclusivity,” the minister said.
Kawana emphasized that Namibia holds the top position in Southern Africa regarding infrastructure development. This achievement is something that Namibians should take great pride in. He also highlighted that the construction of the new police station will significantly support the police force in carrying out their policing responsibilities effectively within the Kavango West region.
“I am certain that this achievement will help in meeting the desired needs of preventing crime, maintaining law and order, and protecting lives and property within the community. Therefore, I would like to commend the police general for planning and budgeting for an impressive project like the one we will inaugurate today,” said the minister.
Speaking to the audience in Nkurenkuru, Shikongo mentioned that the police force still encounters difficulties concerning proper facilities for officers to adequately provide services to the communities. He further indicated that with the finalization of the Nkurenguru station, it will present a chance for enhanced policing in the area, with the possibility of deploying more members to better serve the community.
He emphasized the importance of discipline among the force, not just in showing respect to their superiors but also in their behaviour both on and off duty while interacting with the communities. Additionally, he stressed the need to look after and keep the facility in good condition.
