Housing federation receives N$10 million

Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has allocated N$10 million to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia to curb the effects of housing shortage in the country.

This was confirmed in a statement released to the media on 2 August.

“The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD) has once again extended its support to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN)… The partnership between MURD and SDFN has been pivotal in driving positive change, and the recent allocation of N$10 million for the financial year 2022/2023 further solidifies this commitment,” the ministry announced this week.

According to the statement, the ministry’s funding has been active in the construction of more than 3 300 out of 7 000 completed to date.

The federation will use the funds to build homes for 229 households, to address the urgent need for housing.

“The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development’s continued support to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia is a testament to their dedication in uplifting disadvantaged communities and improving their quality of life,” the statement said.

Since 2000, the ministry has been working with the federation, allocating N$1 million annually to the Twahangana Fund. This fund has enabled SDFN to leverage its own savings effectively, channelled towards constructing homes for disadvantaged households in Namibia.

The federation has become a role model for sustainable housing solutions in Namibia by actively engaging with communities and advocating for better living conditions, the ministry said.

“As more families find a safe and stable place to call home, the future looks brighter for the shack dwellers of Namibia, fostering a sense of hope and empowerment across the nation,” the statement read.
