Two homesteads burn to ashes in Oshikoto region

Two families in the Oshikoto region have been left destitute after their homesteads burnt to ashes over the weekend.

The incidents occurred on two sperate occasions at Nanghene and Onyati C villages.

Speaking to The Namibian on Monday, Onyaanya constituency councillor Gideon Shikomba said the fires were started by children playing with matches in the homesteads while the elders were away.

“One of the homesteads at Nanghene village, belonging to Nafitali Ndhila, had eight huts which are completely burnt down with all its belongings such as beds, blankets, food, clothing and identity documents. There are 14 people residing in that homestead.

“The other homestead belongs to Ndiyoya Ndemuongela, where eight huts with all its belongings burnt to ashes as well,” said Shikomba.

“There are 17 children living in that homestead,” he said.

Shikomba has appealed to good Samaritans to assist the families in any way they can.

“Please assist the families who have lost everything, including children who have no uniforms to attend schools anymore,” Shikomba said.
