Over the past two years, Namibians have been hit by a new craze.

Two words have taken over all major discussions in the country, and everybody wants to understand them and be part of them. That’s green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen is also known as renewable hydrogen or clean energy.

It is produced by using renewable energy sources such as wind and sunlight and splitting hydrogen from oxygen through a process called electrolysis of water.

So, basically, there is a water molecule, which is split into oxygen and hydrogen.

“Green hydrogen has four pilot projects. 1. Green Hydrogen Applications in the Port Environment, which aims to decarbonize port logistics and reduce the port’s carbon footprint. 2. Hydrogen-Diesel Dual Fuel Locomotive Project: Its goal is to develop the first hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel locomotive in Africa by using a combination of diesel and hydrogen. 3. The H2-Pilot Plant / Refuelling Station: This project serves as a testing ground for hydrogen technologies and aims to develop applications for hydrogen in the transport, mining, and port sectors. 4 The Daures Green Hydrogen Village, which aims to produce Namibia’s first green hydrogen and ammonia in 2023, will also produce Namibia’s first carbon-free agriculture,” explains James Mnyupe, Commissioner for Green Hydrogen Namibia.

Jerome Namaseb is the CEO of the Daures Green Hydrogen Village. “The government signed an agreement with Hyphen Hydrogen Energy to develop a green hydrogen and ammonia complex, which will be the first fully vertically integrated gigawatt-scale green hydrogen project in Namibia. It aims to produce 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen for regional and global markets and is expected to commence production in 2026.”

Toni Beukes is the Head of Environment, Social, and Governance at Hyphen Namibia. “These initiatives will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and positioning Namibia as a leader in the global green hydrogen market.”
