THE Namibian police in Okahandja, Otjozondjupa Region, are investigating a case of drowning after a man allegedly complained about hot weather, jumped into the Swakoppoort Dam, and disappeared into the water.
All attempts to rescue him ended in failure.
According to the police, the 40-year-old Erwin Makenzie Tjikune, a resident of Farm Tugab 4, drowned Monday afternoon, but his body was only retrieved by the police on Wednesday.
It is alleged that Tjikune and a female companion, as well as a young male, were socializing at the dam. He was allegedly drinking the homemade traditional liquor known as Ombike when he started complaining about the hot weather, undressed, and jumped into the dam.
He disappeared into the water after a few minutes, and the unidentified woman tried to assist, to no avail.
The police said that the woman sent the young man to go and ask for assistance from anyone nearby, but nothing could be done to save Tjikune. The matter was then reported to the police, and the search was carried out, culminating with the finding and retrieval of the body on Wednesday.
