MINISTER of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has urged the Oshikuku Town Council to continue ensuring that no member of the community is left behind in the provision of serviced land and affordable housing.

Uutoni made the request during the official handover of 219 houses in Oshikuku on Monday.

“Government at all levels, central, regional, and local, remains committed to creating an enabling environment and opportunities for our people in general,” he said.

He added that the government, through his ministry, is pursuing and implementing various impactful interventions and initiatives to scale up and accelerate access to tenure security, proper sanitation, and decent housing.

Uutoni then urged all people to initiate corporate social responsibilities that address the challenges faced by the communities they operate in and collectively find a way to address the housing backlog.

Meanwhile, Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala urged Namibians to join various platforms to ensure they have their own property.

Endjala’s call comes after he indicated that many men are nowhere to be seen in the development of their towns, as there are few or no men owning houses.

He indicated that many houses are now owned by women who have seized the opportunities coming their way.

Johanna Amutenya, a member of SDFN, said the Federation is a people’s movement for saving groups in Namibia with 937 groups and has saved N$42.5 million with 31,650 members countrywide.

In Omusati, Amutenya said they have 56 groups with a total of 1,504 members and have saved N$3.1 million.

According to her, they have constructed 8 houses in Ruacana and Okonyota, Etunda 8, Outapi 122, Tsandi 78, Okahao 55, Okalongo 11, and Oshikuku 61.

Furthermore, she indicated that a total of 339 houses were constructed in the region at a cost of N$8.5 million and have repaid already N$6.9 million.

Amutenya noted that the Oshikuku network has a total of 217 members with three saving groups, of which 61 are house owners, and they have saved an amount of N$513,067.85.
