Professor Mutjinde Katjiua says the Ovaherero people have an assignment at hand in terms of good governance, resilient livelihoods, and the establishment of a cooperative to assist in the economic development of the community.

Professor Katjiua made these remarks at the 119th Annual Commemoration at Ozombuzovindimba Day in the Otjinene Constituency.

Speaking at Ozombuzovindimba Professor Katjiua highlighted the historical events at the site during the 1904 war between the German troops and the Ovaherero people that led to the extermination order.

Katjiua, who leads one faction of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority, says his people should continue to preserve culture and traditional norms despite the unbearable conditions they went through.

The reparation aspect is also not ignored, says Katjiua.

He added that now it is time to focus on development, and the communities should be at the forefront with assistance from key stakeholders, which is the government.

“Every member of this community should also be aligned with equally answering the call to address community development. Second, all of us should partake in community activities and also don’t ask what the traditional authority will do for you, but what you will do for the traditional authority. This should be a shared responsibility for all of us.”

Katjiua also appealed to community members to remain united and foster a good partnership with those who are in the diaspora.
