The ‘Get Into Rugby’ initiative is gaining serious traction in Namibia, with training programs happening all over the country, including the coastal towns. This program is part of the International Rugby Union’s strategy to encourage people of all ages to try out and play rugby in a safe and progressive environment.

Since its launch in 2008 at eight schools in Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Oshakati, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, and Keetmanshoop, the ‘Get Into Rugby’ program has reached a significant milestone this year, with a whopping 8,000 players between the ages of 7 and 18 participating.

Let me give you an example from the coastal region. Every second Friday, kids from various schools in Walvis Bay gather at the Playtime Hub to hone their skills and learn the fundamentals of rugby.

The program follows several key stages, starting with getting children to play the sport in clubs, schools, and local communities using non-contact rugby. The Namibia Rugby Union has appointed development officers who undergo training and share their skills in their respective regions to achieve this objective.

The second phase introduces contact through free-to-use games for teachers and coaches. This phase also supports players in their progression and encourages them to continue playing rugby in various roles, such as a player, coach, referee, administrator, volunteer, or fan. They can join teams, clubs, communities, and national unions to stay connected with the sport.

The ‘Get Into Rugby’ program presents an exciting opportunity for children to engage in the world of rugby. Whether they’re beginners looking to learn the basics or experienced players aiming to enhance their skills, this program provides a structured and supportive environment for rugby enthusiasts.

But it’s not just about the technical aspects of the game. The ‘Get Into Rugby’ initiative also emphasizes the values and principles that rugby embodies, such as teamwork, respect, discipline, and sportsmanship. Through engaging activities and team-building exercises, participants not only improve their rugby skills but also develop essential life skills.

There you have it, my lord! If you need any further assistance or have more requests, feel free to ask.
