ISRAEL Nuuyoma was remanded in custody after making his first court appearance at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on rape charges on Friday.
Israel is accused of raping four minors since the beginning of February this year in the area of Ongwediva.
Presiding magistrate Mozay Jansen postponed the matter to 25 April 2024 for further investigation and for the accused to obtain legal aid assistance.
This follows after State Prosecutor Yeukai Kangira opposed the granting of bail.
Kangira indicated that investigations are not finalized, and the social worker’s reports are outstanding, and some previous rape cases are also being investigated.
“We do not recommend bail as the accused faces serious offenses and has a propensity to commit the same offense as well as general offenses while out on bail,” she said.
She added that the accused has a pending rape case in the Regional Court Oshakati, which involves two counts of rape against minors.
Kangira indicated that the accused also has a case of theft pending against him, and he is still to be charged in a housebreaking case.
She added that the accused has a total of 8 cases against him.
Furthermore, Kangira told the Magistrate that they fear abscondment if he was granted bail.
Kangira indicated that the victims are all minors under the age of 14 years.
Namibian Police Force Community Affairs Officer Warrant Frieda Shikole accused was arrested last week Friday.
According to Shikole, the accused was identified by four of the victims through an identification parade held at Oshakati Police.
