Councillors from the Otjiwarongo Municipality retained their positions during a swearing-in ceremony conducted by Magistrate Immanuel Udjombala.

Councillor Gideon Iyambo was elected as an additional council member, while the Popular Democratic Movement’s Ernst Muraranganda was not sworn in, as he did not pitch up for the position.

Muraranganda did not give any official notice then.

Magistrate Immanuel Udjombala would not continue the proceedings until a letter, signed by Muraranganda, was received in which he acknowledged that the election could continue in his absence.

“If this election is going to proceed and there’s a deadlock, that’s why the seven members are a casting block in respect of no official communication; I cannot preside over the elections.”

About an hour later, said letter was received, with Muraranganda indicating that he would not be casting any vote.

All the councillors retained their positions, while Independent Patriot for Change councillor Gideon Iyambo was elected as an additional council member.

Mayor Gottlieb Shivute says retaining his position speaks volumes about the trust and confidence shown in him as a leader.

“I am here to serve the quality of life for each and every one of you. Together, we will strive to make Otjiwarongo a place where we are all proud to call home. Our town is faced with both challenges and opportunities, and I am ready to address them head-on.’

Shivute is also the chairperson of the council, while Gerhard Hoko remains chair of the management committee.

Among the community members who came to witness the swearing-in were Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua and Chairperson of the Regional Council Marlayn Mbakera.
