THE Calueque Dam is almost full to capacity, reaching 94 percent, due to substantial rainfall in the central and southern regions of Angola. Leonard Hango, the Senior Hydrologist for the Cuvelai-Etosha basin at the Ministry of Agriculture, mentioned that if the water level exceeds 95%, the opening of the dam’s slices cannot be ruled out.

While the western parts of the Omusati Region and Cunene province in Angola experienced heavy rains, the Cuvelai catchment area is yet to receive sufficient rain, minimizing the risk of flooding. Rain returned to the northern regions after more than a week of absence.

Hango emphasized that his office maintains continuous communication with Angolan counterparts, staying updated on the rain and water situation north of the common border to monitor potential floodwater reaching the border area. Although early warning stations are strategically placed along the main water streams south of the border, some have been vandalized, compromising their effectiveness.

Hango also reported that the recent wave of rainwater that reached Ogongo from Angola has subsided, indicating no imminent second wave.
