Omuthiya embarks on community empowerment project

The Omuthiya Town Council has passed a council resolution to issue a public notice for the job seekers who reside within Omuthiya to be registered on the council’s database for temporary employment.

The unemployed residents of Omuthiya are expected to register their particulars on the database, where temporary recruitment will be sourced.

Town spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge said this in an interview with The Namibian yesterday.

“The council, as per the Local Authorities Act, Act No. 23 of 1992, resolved to embark upon projects aimed at empowering the job seekers within Omuthiya town boundaries. The project is ongoing and we are urging our unemployed residents to register themselves for any possible temporary employment in the future.

“We want to empower our residents through temporary employment opportunities. We have also requested our contractors to always subcontract the job seekers that are registered on our database for semi-skilled work, instead of bringing people from elsewhere, while we have job seekers registered on our database,” she said.

Shingenge said the project started last year and so far, council has offered temporary employment to more than 800 residents.
She added that the project aims to reduce unemployment and eliminate the abuse of alcohol and drugs, as well as theft, by empowering the residents with temporary employment.

“This project is open to everyone and the requirements for one to register are a copy of an identity document, copy of a voter’s card with the local authority and proof of residence at Omuthiya town. This project is open to everyone and there is no political influence. All people from different political parties are welcome to register themselves,” she said.
