South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has described the late president Hage Geingob as a towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation.

Namibia’s third president died at 00h04 on Sunday after a recent cancer diagnosis.

Geingob this week returned from the United States where he underwent trial treatment.

“President Geingob was a towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation from colonialism and apartheid.

“He was also greatly influential in the solidarity the people of Namibia, extended to the people of South Africa so that we could be free today,” Ramaphosa said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He also reminisced about their last meeting.

“During the visit, we committed our two countries to even closer partnership, inspired in great measure by president Geingob’s passionate conviction on our shared future as nations and greater opportunities and prosperity for citizens on both sides of the Orange River,” the statement reads.
