AS the country prepares for the official memorial and funeral proceedings of the late President Hage G. Geingob, the Namibia Meteorological Services have predicted additional thundershowers in the capital city tomorrow and this weekend.
The severity of these anticipated rain showers has not been determined, creating uncertainty about whether they will impact the events leading up to the late president’s funeral, such as the military procession and the Official Memorial Service taking place in Windhoek tomorrow and on Saturday, respectively, as well as President Geingob’s funeral at Heroes’ Acre on Sunday.
However, the public is advised to prepare accordingly and exercise caution, given the expected weather conditions and the high influx of traffic, as the events scheduled in honour of the late president are expected to draw a large number of attendees.
Windhoek has experienced varied rain showers over the last two weeks, with some areas receiving only light drips, while others were left flooded. For instance, yesterday’s thundershowers affected certain neighbourhoods with light rainfall, while other parts of the capital witnessed substantial rainfall and even hail.
The southern part of the city, particularly in the vicinity of Pioneerspark, recorded more than 40 millimetres (mm) of rainfall in a matter of hours yesterday. Photos and videos posted by Facebook user Cornelia Conny Locher illustrate the impact of the heavy rainfall in Pioneerspark, which left some areas significantly flooded.
However, Pioneerspark is not the sole area in the capital that experienced noteworthy rainfall yesterday. Windhoek’s Rocky Crest also experienced substantial rainfall, accompanied by a hailstorm. Images shared by Facebook user Rickey Klazen depict how the hailstones left the ground in some parts of Rocky Crest barely visible.
Beyond these two neighbourhoods, areas such as Suiderhof, Academia, Eros, and Klein Windhoek, among others, also received some rainfall, though for most, it was not particularly noteworthy. These thundershowers are expected to persist tomorrow – not only in Windhoek but also in other parts of the Khomas Region.
Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that tomorrow’s showers in the Khomas Region will likely be moderate to heavy, accompanied by fresh to strong winds. Namibia Meteorological Services also predicted isolated showers for the Kunene, Otjozondjupa, and Hardap regions tomorrow.
Given the potential impact of tomorrow’s rain showers on various regions, those traveling during this period are recommended to be aware of the expected weather conditions, use roads responsibly, and exercise caution.
