THE Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) is urging everyone with suspended SIM cards to register their cards within the next three months to retain their existing numbers.
Mufaro Nesongano, CRAN’s Executive of Communication and Consumer Relations, explained that Namibia had a total of 2,387,330 active SIM cards by 31st March 2024, of which 1,868,412 were successfully registered, representing a registration rate of 78.26%.
However, Nesongano revealed that by 1st April 2024, a total of 518,918 SIM cards were unregistered and thus suspended for a period of 3 months. This represents a suspension rate of 21.73%.
“During the three-month suspension period, customers with unregistered SIM cards will encounter service disruptions and will receive warning notifications,” he explained.
Nesongano therefore reiterated the importance of compliance with regulatory requirements and emphasised that there will be no further extension as per the directive of the Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology, Emma Theofelus.
“Consumers are thus encouraged to take advantage of this grace period to register their SIM cards and retain their existing numbers. It’s crucial to note that failure to register within this allocated timeframe will result in the termination of the associated number, necessitating the acquisition of a new one,” Emilia Nghikembua, CRAN’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), added.
