What would have been an annual show has become a monthly experience, due to demand and the love for jazz!

The sixth edition of the ‘According to Jazz’ series, which is curated by local company August, will feature jazz renditions of Afrobeats hits from around the continent in Windhoek on Friday.

August is a local entertainment company and curates premium sonic experiences.

The event will feature some of Africa’s best instrumentalists, namely Fernando Piu (drums), Wayne M (bass), Imms Nicolau (lead guitar), Raymond Mupfumira (pianist) and Cape Town-based saxophonist Gareth Harvey.

August founder and curator Ama Owusu-Agyemang says the band has been pivotal in creating the experience with him and has built a loyal audience that commits to its sessions on the last Sunday of every month.

“What would have probably been an annual show has ended up being a monthly experience, due to the demand. We have had everything from ‘R&B According to Jazz’ and ‘Gospel According to Jazz’ to ‘Hip-hop According to Jazz’,” he says.

SOLD OUT

Owusu-Agyemang says to date, five of the six editions have sold out.

“Based on the current numbers, we expect the same this weekend for ‘Afrobeats According to Jazz’.

We have the likes of ‘Namibia According to Jazz’, ‘Christmas According to Jazz’, and more, lined up,”he said.

Owusu-Agyemang says with the ‘According to Jazz’ series, they are set to unpack the dynamic nature of jazz as a camouflage genre that morphs into form, matter and sound, across eras, cultures and expectations.

He says they are premium experiences and have engaged the audience with rearranged jazz renditions of hits across various genres.

“Our series for this year has taken a spin on the genre, and we have jazz musicians and aficionados present at all our events to experience a unique angle of jazz.

“Our last edition, ‘Hip-hop According to Jazz’, featured Lioness as the headline act, who performed her top hits in a jazz fusion,” he says.

Owusu-Agyemang added that the ‘According to Jazz’ series is an experience.

“The texture of the event isn’t something one can describe and as a first for Namibia, we are seeing overwhelming responses, so this is only the beginning,” he says.

Tickets are available at Berrylicious in Windhoek. No tickets will be sold at the venue.
