Some community members of Ndama East in Kavango East Region held a demonstration on Friday, requesting that the decision to move the school back to Ndama South West be reconsidered.

Earlier on, the community had requested that the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture evaluate and confirm a resolution on the matter.

Yet, with no positive response in sight, the community demands that the government appoint an independent delegate to decide on the school’s fate.

“The government must intervene and send an independent delegation to come investigate the matter at hand to avoid chaos. The Director of education must explain to the community on why she mislead them by giving them the application form to apply for the establishment of ndama east school through her office if she knew that she was never in support of it, the director must explain to the community on why she assigned her duties and responsibility of address the community on the basis of education matters to politicians, the community members are not happy with the governors misinforming the nation on the NBC News broadcaster on the 6th of June 2023 that the school will be built at ndama east primary school, were learners are present and surprisingly on the following day that was on the 7th of June 2023 the contractor started the constriction work at sun city that was that was declared as wrong site”, said the group’s spokesperson, Ndumba Paulus.

Receiving the petition, Chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Council Damian Maghambayi said the decision to return the project to the original contractor at Ndama South West was a result of a N$120,000 additional fee they would have been required to pay were they to abandon that site.

Maghambayi read the response from the Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Anna Nghipondoka, requesting that Governor Bonifatius Wakudumo move the school to Ndama South East.

“Given the above reasons, the ministry cannot afford to start construction work at the new site as you proposed, as it is not cost-effective given the limited funds and time constraints to deliver on these classrooms within the remaining time frame.”

Despite the controversy, construction of the school remains underway at Ndama South West.
