One person died in a motor car accident on the B2 road between Swakopmund and Arandis on Tuesday morning.
Erongo police spokesperson, inspector Ileni Shapumba said a passenger was also injured in the accident which occurred at about 09h15, while several other passengers escaped unscathed.
A Mahindra bakkie reportedly hit a Toyota Quantum from behind as it was pulling off the road behind other vehicles in a convoy.
“Due to strong winds, it is believed the Mahindra pickup lost control and collided head-on with a Scania truck,” said Shapumba.
The driver of the Mahindra bakkie, identified as 48-year-old Morne Gareth Openshaw, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in his vehicle sustained minor injuries. Openshaw’s next of kin have been informed of his passing.
The driver of the Scania truck was alone in his vehicle at the time of the accident, while the Toyota Quantum was occupied by the driver and nine passengers, all of whom escaped without visible injuries.
The police have initiated an investigation into the accident under charges of culpable homicide.
“Our team is currently analysing the circumstances that led to this tragic accident,” inspector Shapumba stated, “We urge the public to always exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially in harsh weather conditions,” Shapumba added.
