THE chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, said that he is closely monitoring developments in Mozambique following the disputed general elections held on 9 October.
According to a Reuters report, Mahamat expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence, particularly in the aftermath of the Constitutional Council’s pronouncement of the final election results, which led to scores of fatalities.
Mahamat extended his sincere condolences to the bereaved families, called for calm, and urged security services to exercise restraint in the use of force amid the violence.
He further encouraged the government and all national political and social actors to seek a peaceful resolution to the current crisis to prevent further loss of life and destruction of property.
Mahamat reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to working with the Mozambican government, national stakeholders, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to end the violence and uphold constitutional democracy in Mozambique.
