Windhoek, 20 July 2023 – Baronice Hans, the Managing Director of Bank Windhoek, emphasized the crucial link between the well-being of a nation’s people and its success and growth. She made these remarks during the launch of the twenty-third edition of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project. Hans highlighted the importance of embracing corporate social responsibility as a means to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with communities and pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable future.
Contributors are encouraged to visit the e-Apple platform on the Bank Windhoek website by the Cancer Apple Project. Donors can choose to buy real or digital apples and apple juice. Physical apples are still $5, apple juice is $8, and there is a $5 starting price for virtual apples.
Since its inception in 2000 with an initial donation of N$250,000, the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project has raised an impressive N$33.9 million for the Cancer Association of Namibia. Hans hailed the project as a remarkable initiative, standing as one of Namibia’s most prominent corporate social initiatives aimed at making a tangible difference in the lives of cancer patients. She emphasized that Bank Windhoek’s commitment to social purpose is deeply ingrained in its strategic imperatives, as the bank strives to create sustainable value for all stakeholders by partnering with customers, employees, and communities. “Our collective efforts can foster positive change,” she added.
Rolf Hansen, the Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Association of Namibia, stated that through the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, they aim to provide a channel for individuals, businesses, and organizations to contribute their time, resources, and donations towards the fight against cancer in Namibia. The previous reporting year, ending on February 28, 2023, saw 991 men screened for prostate cancer, with 21 cases referred for treatment. Additionally, 3,634 women underwent screening for cervical cancer, leading to the detection and referral of 53 cases for treatment.
Additionally, the Cancer Association collaborated with the Dr. AB May Cancer Care Centre and funded biopsy kits that enable early detection of breast cancer, improving the prognosis for those suffering from the disease.
Hans expressed her enthusiasm for the Cancer Association of Namibia’s unceasing efforts, noting their extensive and revolutionary influence, from establishing screening locations to serving as a reliable partner in cancer care.
Bank Windhoek’s assistance for the healthcare industry goes beyond the Cancer Apple Project and includes funding for the renowned Namibian Oncology Centre in Windhoek. The clinic, which was opened in 2015, offers modern, all-encompassing cancer care with a focus on early identification, treatment, and prevention.
“HeroesUnite,” the catchy name of the 2023 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Campaign, is in line with the Harambee Prosperity Plan, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the National Development Priorities. According to Hans, the campaign recognizes the shared belief in overcoming obstacles and supporting a cause that has an influence on millions of people. Hansen also showed enthusiasm about the theme of the campaign.
Hans concluded by urging support for the Cancer Apple Fundraising Project as a means to take a stand against cancer and offer hope to those in need. Together, positive change can be brought into the lives of those battling this disease. All funds raised by the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project will be donated to the Cancer Association in November 2023.-Namibia Daily News
