The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has appealed to businesses to give their employees time off on Friday to observe a national tribute to president Hage Geingob.
In a circular addressed to its members on Wednesday, the business organisation requested businesses “able and at their discretion” to allow their employees to witness a street procession in honour of the late president that is planned for Windhoek on Friday.
The NCCI asked employers to allow their employees to leave work to observe the street procession, which at this stage is expected to start at 14h00 on Friday.
“While we understand that releasing employees may impact upon daily operations, we implore the business community, if it possibly can, to participate in this significant event,” the organisation stated.
“It is a moment of national importance and unity, allowing us to collectively honour the memory of our late president,” the NCCI added.
Cabinet secretary George Simataa informed public servants earlier on Wednesday that the Office of the Prime Minister decided that they will work only until 10h00 on Friday, to allow them to witness a military procession in honour of Geingob along a route in Windhoek on Friday.
