The newly inaugurated Oukaume Fishing Trawler is set to provide 1,100 jobs to the locals.

The Oukaume Vessel was acquired in September this year with an investment of N$100 million.

Speaking at the event was the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Derek Klazen, highlighting the contribution of the fishing sector to job creation and its role in food security.

Klazen says the three entities, Cadilu Fishing, Ompagona Fishing Company, and the Walvis Bay Small Boat Owners Association, are partners in ensuring the prosperity of the fishing industry.

He highlighted the integration of female crew members on board, which he said represents a significant advancement toward achieving gender parity and inclusivity within the industry.

“This occasion underscores the fishing sector’s steadfast dedication to growth, innovation, modernisation, and sustainability. The industry is a crucial pillar of our nation’s economic development and prosperity. Therefore, we strive to modernise our operations and maximise economic benefits while utilising the resources sustainably for the future of our children.”

He highlighted the crucial role that Spain has played as a partner in the fishing industry, providing significant financial support, foreign earnings, and valuable expertise.

Also speaking at the event was the Ambassador of Spain in Namibia, Alberto de la Calle.

“One of the most important sectors of Namibia’s economy, both countries and its people, and in particular the people of Walvis Bay, has greatly benefitted from this collaboration, and in a similar partnership 35 years later continued to create thousands of jobs to bring wealth in the form of Namibian exports and return of taxes for Namibian transitory to allow sharing know-how in the form of skills development, operation research, fish management, as well as a number of actives of corporate social responsibility that continues to change the lives of both Namibian and Spanish people.”

Oukaume is equipped with several facilities that enhance its operational efficiency, including a fully equipped gym.
