Call for rural women to gift pots to Nandi-Ndaitwah

Swapo mobiliser for the Oshakati East district Gabriel ‘Teddy’ Kamwanka has called on rural women from the Oshana region to bring traditional baskets, bowls and pots as gifts for Swapo presidential candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is due to address a Swapo rally at Oshakati tomorrow.

“Every woman in the Oshakati East district and Oshana region should dress properly, carry a traditional basket. Each branch in the Oshana region must bring six baskets as a gift to comrade Nandi-Ndaitwah,” Kamwanka said.

Kamwanka also said that those especially from his district are urged to work very hard and bring baskets and pots.

“Let’s go and give gifts to our candidate,” Kamwanka added.

Speaking to The Namibian on Wednesday, Kamwanka said culturally, a gift of pots and baskets is to make a guest feel welcomed.

He also defended the move saying it’s an African cultural practice.

This is not the first time people give Nandi-Ndaitwah gifts. Last December, she was given a gift of four Bonsmara heifers, a bull and two oxen by Rodger Kauta and retired diplomat Steve Katjiuanjo.

Political commentator Rui Tyitende criticised Kamwanka’s call.

“Knowing the poverty situation in rural areas, this is a form of exploitation of the most vulnerable in society. This kind of politics that further pushes the downtrodden to the periphery of misery should be discouraged,” Tyitende said.
