The City of Windhoek has warned the public of a concerning trend of fraudsters posing as municipal officials and offering customers the chance to bypass their electricity meters in exchange for a fee.
This was announced in a public notice by City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye on Thursday morning.
“This is a fraudulent scheme and we urge the public to be vigilant and not fall for it, our staff are responsible for ensuring that all meter points are correctly metered and that the council receives its due revenue.”
Akwenye said customers who participate in such activities are breaking the law and will face legal consequences.
He added that it is a serious crime to bypass electricity, tamper with an electricity meter or connect to an illegal electricity source.
“The minimum penalty for this offence is N$16 000, which can lead to a criminal case being laid against the culprit.
If you suspect that someone has interfered with your electricity meter, please contact the customer contact centre, you can also report any illegal electricity connections to the City Police,” he said.
