MEMBERS of Parliament and High Commissioners from various Commonwealth countries gathered at the Parliament on Monday to celebrate the 75th Commonwealth Day.
The day, annually commemorated on the second Monday of March, was hosted under the theme “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth” this year.
Speaking at the official commemoration at the parliament, Lydia Kandetu, Secretary of the National Assembly, explained that the theme aims to highlight how the 56-member countries must harness their strength by building resilience, unlocking potential, leveraging the Commonwealth advantage, and fostering a connected digital Commonwealth.
“This transformation is vital to ensure a resilient common future where no one is left behind,” she added.
Every year, the leader of the Commonwealth delivers a speech to member states in honour of the day. In a speech delivered by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Loide Kasingo, on behalf of King Charles III, the monarch underscored the diversity among Commonwealth nations, emphasizing that the strength of the Commonwealth family lies in friendship and diversity.
“We are united by the many challenges that we face, whether it be climate change, the loss of nature, or social and economic change that new technology is bringing. Our diversity means that these challenges affect us all differently, and we experience their impact in different ways. However, their seriousness is common to each one of us. All of this means that we must work together to understand each other’s perspective, including the inequality and injustice which still persist to this day. We must find ways of healing and supporting each other to pursue solutions,” King Charles III said.
