A mother’s love and a community’s kindness led to the provision of a safe home for Windhoek resident Olivia Hamutenya and her daughter Amenenge after two years in the Katutura Intermediate Hospital.
Delivered prematurely in May 2023 at just four months, baby Amenenge Haikali, nicknamed Strawberry because of her stature, was diagnosed with Chronic Lung Disease, which requires constant medical care for her survival.
Due to her delicate health needs, Strawberry spent much of her early life in the hospital because their home environment was unsuitable for her condition, and financial challenges made it impossible for her single mother to make the necessary improvements.
In March this year, after being discharged from the hospital, an attempt to return home resulted in Strawberry struggling to breathe due to the dusty conditions and the hospital became their residence.
Recognizing their dire situation, the community stepped in and through the generosity of volunteers, they constructed a new, safe home for Olivia and Strawberry, which began early this month.
Amuta Investments assisted in building the house free of charge.
As she approached her new home, Hamutenya was overwhelmed with gratitude, shedding tears of joy after months of living in uncertainty.
In addition to the renovated house, Hamutenya also received two beds, clothing, and food.
