The School of Military Science is hosting the International Conference on Security, Resource Control, and Democracy in Africa at the University of Namibia.
The three-day conference, which draws participants from across the SADC region and beyond, will be conducted virtually and also in person.
The conference serves as a networking platform for researchers, scientists, policymakers, and other interested parties to share experiences on emerging issues and explore best practices and solutions relating to security, resource control, and democracy on the African continent.
The conference was officially opened by the Executive Director, Dr. Wilhelmine Shivute, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Frans Kapofi.
“Geopolitics draws our attention to the strategic significance of natural resources and the ideas of environmental determination that facilitated and justified colonialism on the African continent; the struggle for access and control of strategic natural resources remains the driving force behind Africa’s interactions with the rest of the world.”
Dr. Shivute is confident that the conference will generate ideas on how Africa best regulates and controls its resources and ensures they are beneficial to its people.
“Institutions such as the School of Military Science at UNAM are poised and equipped with the intellectual capacity to play the role of systematically studying and making us aware of several country-specific threats with the prosperity to limit our policy choices in world politics.”
The three-day conference, which started on Tuesday, is expected to end on Thursday.
