A TAXI driver and his passenger were allegedly robbed at gunpoint at Epako Cemetery in the Gobabis area on Monday.

Omaheke Community Affairs Inspector Fina Sakajengenga said a 23-year-old woman and a 27-year-old taxi driver were robbed of N$17 386, which belonged to a betting shop where the female victim works.

Sakajengenga explained that the victim had collected money from three different betting shops around the Epako suburb. She then came to the fourth betting shop at Club CountDown to collect money and called her driver, who delivered stock at the same club.

She further indicated that they were in the process of collecting money from the fifth betting shop in Tswanablock when a suspect asked for a lift to Herero location and was offered one.

“While they were driving, the suspect allegedly made phone calls to an unknown man to be dropped off where he was, even giving the phone to the driver for directions. They drove up to the cemetery where the second and third suspect were,” she said.

She added that the first suspect, seated directly behind the driver, allegedly pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot the driver. The driver opened his door and ran through the cemetery, while the other two suspects pulled the complainant from the motor vehicle and robbed her of the cash.

The complainant also ran away from the scene and allegedly heard a gunshot, but no one was injured.

The three suspects fled in the motor vehicle. However, the vehicle was later found abandoned approximately 2.9 km from Gobabis on the road to Drimiopsis by the members of the Serious Crime Unit.
