The country has witnessed the return of cold conditions this week, accompanied by destructive winds, resulting in extremely frosted conditions in certain areas and severe sandstorms in others.
The extreme cold conditions were felt in various places in the country. However, the southern, eastern, and central regions have experienced the most pronounced effects of the extreme cold, as evidenced by numerous photos and videos circulating online, showcasing the frosty conditions in these areas.
Reports from weather enthusiasts online indicate that Keetmanshoop in the South recorded a temperature of 0°C this morning, while Rehoboth, Mariental, and Stampriet in the Hardap Region experienced temperatures ranging from -7°C to -3°C. In the Centre, Windhoek saw temperatures drop as low as -4°C this morning, and Seeis, a small settlement located just a few kilometres from the capital city, saw temperatures plummet to -10°C.
The East also endured significantly low temperatures, with Gobabis in the Omaheke Region registering -4°C, and Hippo Farm, located a few kilometres from Gobabis, experiencing an astonishing -11°C this morning.
Yesterday also came with significantly low temperatures across the country. This, too, can be seen in various photos and videos shared by social media users. One of these photos, posted by Facebook user Rattex Von Raesfeld, captured the frozen conditions at Moutonsvlei near Klein Aub, where parts of a tree stood encased in ice.
According to Namibia Meteorological Services, these cold conditions are expected to persist in the interior tomorrow.
While the southern, central and eastern regions of the country are battling severe cold spells, several places from the North to the South have been grappling with destructive sandstorms over the past two days. Affected areas include Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, Lüderitz, and Oranjemund. Informanté recently shared the details about the impact of these sandstorms in the aforementioned places.
However, the impact of these destructive sandstorms was also felt in Aus in the //Kharas Region, Sesriem in the Hardap Region, and even Opuwo in the Kunene Region. The Ministry of Information and Communication in the Kunene Region reported that Opuwo residents have been waking up to dust storms since yesterday morning.
These sandstorms are also anticipated to continue tomorrow. Namibia Meteorological Services has predicted that the East wind conditions are likely to persist along the coastal areas, resulting in intermittent sandstorms. Furthermore, dust storms are expected to persist in the interior regions tomorrow due to the presence of fresh to strong north-easterly winds in certain areas.
