FC Ongos’ hot form continues

FC Ongos’ hot form in the FNB Women’s Super League continued when they thrashed Girls & Goals 6-0 on Saturday to open up a four-point lead at the top of the table. 

It was their seventh consecutive victory which put them on 21 points from seven matches, while they have now racked up 40 goals at more than five per match in the process. 

With that, the defending champions Ongos, also exacted full revenge after suffering a surprise 1-0 defeat to Girls & Goals in the Hage Geingob Cup final last November. 

This time around, Ongos soon took control of their encounter at the NFA Centre and after numerous attacks were thwarted, they finally cracked Girls & Goals’ defence with two goals in two minutes by Memory Ngonda and Julia Rutjindo. 

That put them in the driving seat by halftime and they put the issue beyond doubt with three quickfire goals at the start of the second half. Ngonda scored her second barely a minute after the restart, while striker Anna Shikusho pounced with two goals in three minutes – the first when she scrambled in a loose ball from a corner, and the second when she smashed in a cross by Julana Blou. 

FC Ongos were now cruising and Shikusho completed her hattrick when they won a penalty midway through the second half and she scored from the spot. 

Girls & Goals tried hard to get back into the match, with Beverly Uueziua leading their attacks, while Millicent Hikuam and Michane Vries both came close to scoring, but Ongos were hardly exposed and they went on to complete an emphatic victory. 

FC Ongos captain Lovisa Mulunga said it was a thorough performance. 

“It was really a good game considering they are our sister team, so we expected a tough opponent and they really displayed that toughness. But obviously we came out victorious and that is what we wanted from this match,” she said.

“I’m happy with each players’ performance and we really just wanted to take revenge because of the Hage Geingob Cup where they beat us 1-0, so this was just to show what Ongos is all about,” she added.

“We have got off to a great start and now we just want to maintain that form throughout the second round,” she said.

Khomas Nampol, meanwhile, moved up to 17 points in second place after beating Arrows Ladies 1-0. 

The visiting coastal side put in a battling performance and it looked as though they would get a share of the spoils, but Ester Iita struck with a goal in the final ten minutes to thwart Arrows’ hopes. Khomas Nampol are now the only remaining unbeaten team in the league along with FC Ongos, with five wins and two draws, while they still remain in touch with the leaders.

Beauties FC also maintained their title challenge with a commanding 5-0 victory against Nust Babes. 

Their mercurial striker Fiola Vliete scored a hattrick, while Helena Amwandangi and Rauna Uugulu added one goal each to put them in third position on the log on 16 points.

Unam Bokkies also stayed in touch with the leaders with a 2-1 victory against V Power Angels. Vevangapi Kambato and Meltret Ujamba scored their goals, which puts them fourth on the log on 15 points.

In another match at the Uukwagula Stadium in Oshakati, Ongwediva Queens beat Okahandja FC 2-1, to move up to seventh position on 10 points from seven matches, while Okahandja remain rock bottom, still looking for a first victory after eight consecutive defeats.
