THE ongoing drought is not only impacting farmers and rural communities but is also significantly affecting urban areas, including the Oshana Region. The Oshana Regional Council is set to distribute food items to 552 households in the region, aiming to assist those grappling with food insecurity.
A total of 12 790 individuals have been registered to benefit from the program. Among them, 6 560 people are registered in Oshakati, and 6 270 are registered in Ongwediva. The number of beneficiaries in Ondangwa is yet to be determined.
Andreas Uutoni, Chairperson of the Oshana Regional Committee, outlined the distribution plan. Each local authority will receive 184 bags of maize meal, 184 bottles of cooking oil, and 737 cans of tinned fish. The total value of the food items is N$134 375, allocated to Oshakati, Ongwediva, and Ondangwa.
Uutoni expressed the hope that this gesture would build resilience within communities, aiding them in navigating these challenging times. The committee remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to the well-being of citizens. Uutoni emphasized the importance of a transparent distribution process overseen by local authorities and community leaders to ensure the assistance reaches those who need it the most.
Oshana Regional Governor Elia Irimari acknowledged that the persistent drought has not only impacted farmers and rural communities but has also significantly affected urban areas. Many families in urban settings face challenges in accessing sufficient food and basic necessities, leading to increased vulnerability and hardship. Irimari views this food donation as a testament to the compassion and goodwill existing within their society.
