Futsal Namibia has become fully affiliated with the Namibia Football Association, while national men and women’s teams will soon compete for the first time in Africa qualifiers for the 2025 Futsal World Cup.
Speaking at their prizegiving event for the 2023 season last week, league organiser Andrei Tirtirau said their affiliation to the NFA will help them develop the sport in Namibia.
“I’m pleased to announce that Futsal Namibia has become fully affiliated to the NFA, so we can now make use of Fifa resources to be able to grow the sport from refereeing, to coaching to player development,” he said.
“Id also like to announce that Namibia has been selected as one of 11 nations to participate at the Africa World Cup qualifier in Mozambique in 2024. We of course have to go and play the qualifications, but given the fact that we have done or paperwork correctly we are now starting the campaign in January and February with the first few games against South Africa and Angola and a few other very good futsal teams,” he added.
“The World Cup will be hosted in 2025 in Azerbaijan and out of the 11 African nations, six will qualify, so we have more than 50 percent chance to actually be at the World Cup in 2025,” he said.
The president of the NFA, Robert Shimooshili congratulated Futsal Namibia on the great strides they had made.
“You have done a great job and we would like to support you by all means. You are more than welcome to approach our office in any area, as far as assistance is concerned,” he said.
“We are looking forward to seeing you taking more youths out of the street, to showcase their skills at regional level, and we will support you to make sure we have futsal is in each region in Namibia. There might be some challenges, but together we can do better,” he said.
