NAMIBIAN President Geingob, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ of Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, announced that he will present a summary of the political and security outlook in the region at the Ordinary Organ Troika summit that commenced in Luanda, Angola on August 16th.
During the summit, Geingob expressed his satisfaction with the progress made by the region in the past year towards achieving the goal of silencing firearms, in alignment with the agenda outlined in “Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.” He reiterated the necessity for increased commitment by the SADC Organ to enhance and reinforce peace and security in the area.
Geingob highlighted the fact that there have been three Extraordinary Organ Troika Summits held since the previous ordinary summit in August 2022 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. These extraordinary summits were convened due to the pressing need for the SADC Organ to address the prevailing security situation in several member states, where armed and terrorist groups have been causing insecurity. Notably, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Mozambique have been affected.
In response to these security challenges, Geingob shared that during the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit held in January 2023, SADC countries directed the Secretariat to initiate the process of arranging a Tripartite Summit involving regional stakeholders that are contributing to peace efforts in Eastern DRC.
Geingob also informed the summit attendees that a Quadripartite Summit took place on June 27, 2023, in Luanda. This summit was coordinated by the African Union in collaboration with SADC and aimed to underscore the importance of harmonizing and coordinating peace interventions. These interventions involve both bilateral and multilateral arrangements aimed at addressing the security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
In conclusion, President Geingob provided updates on the efforts and discussions surrounding security and peace issues within the SADC region. The summits and meetings mentioned indicate the commitment of regional stakeholders to addressing and resolving security challenges in member states.
