Gobabis retains municipal status quo

Melba Tjozongoro of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) and Nona Gorases of the Swapo Party both retained their positions as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, at the Gobabis Town Council.

Elvire Theron, Isaak De Beer, and Sylvester Binga are members of the management committee of the Gobabis Municipality.

Speaking after the election of local authority office bearers, Gobabis Mayor Melba Tjozongoro said the town requires significant development, adding that ageing water supply infrastructure needs to be replaced. To reduce the electricity debt owed to NamPower, the town council paid N$8 million.

“Unfortunatelly, some of us, the residents of Gobabis, are not honouring our responsibility, and when this happens, the municipality of Gobabis takes a decision to ensure that residents migrate to prepaid water and electricity in order to mitigate the escalating high debts the residents and other institutions have with the council. To date, the rollout of prepaid water metres has benefited 45 pensioners in Gobabis and 25 households.”

The Gobabis Municipality Management Committee is still without a chairperson, as councillor Isaak De Beer was nominated for the position by Elvire Throne but was not seconded.

Magistrate Eden Iyambo presided over the election.

Meanwhile, Witvlei and Leonardville Village Councils retained both their chairpersons and deputies.
