THE Gondwana Care Trust’s “Adopt a Quiver Tree” project recently received the 2023 Tree Award in recognition of its conservation efforts.
This award was presented to Gondwana by the Botanical Society of Namibia. The Tree Award acknowledges the commitment of individuals, companies, schools, and establishments in safeguarding and promoting indigenous plant species within the country.
Gondwana’s “Adopt a Quiver Tree” initiative is a dedicated conservation program with the primary objective of preserving and safeguarding Quiver trees, a distinct species of aloe plant native to Namibia’s arid regions.
The project allows participants to “adopt” a Quiver tree by contributing N$600 to support the preservation and protection of the species. In return, adopters receive the exact coordinates of where their tree has been planted within the Gondwana Canyon Park, along with a certificate recognizing their contribution to the project’s cause.
According to Gondwana, the funds generated by the project are allocated to various conservation efforts. This includes the maintenance and protection of Quiver tree populations on Gondwana properties, research on Quiver trees and their ecosystems, and awareness-raising campaigns.
Gondwana explained that the project also aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of preserving Quiver trees, as this plant species currently faces significant threats. These awareness-raising efforts are done by conducting educational and outreach programs, which aim to inform the public about the significance of Quiver trees and the challenges they encounter.
