Some residents of Hakahana Informal Settlement are angry with Octagon Construction, claiming that their properties were damaged during a flood that occurred because of stormwater pipes that were obstructed, allowing water to enter their homes.
The company was contracted to expand the Eneas Peter Nanyemba Road, previously known as Monte Christo Road.
The community is now demanding compensation for the damage caused by the company, which it says amounts to about N$1.8 million.
Their representative, Lasarus Shiyova, said the incident occurred on the 4th of February at midnight at Omuindi Street in Hakahana, where seven houses were flooded.
The disgruntled group says most of their properties, items, and belongings could not be saved as the incident caught them off guard while they were sleeping.
Octagon Construction’s Project Manager, Ewald Ileka, explained that the stormwater pipes were insufficient to handle the amount of rainwater.
Ileka says the company is working to see how best it can resolve the situation through an insurance broker.
Although Octagon Construction admitted guilt three weeks ago, the aggrieved community members accused the company of being reluctant to attend to their demands.
Ileka also added that Octagon Construction is rectifying the situation.
