WHILE this week saw light rainfall in a few places, it was mainly dominated by a relentless heatwave, which saw some areas record temperatures of 40°C or higher.

According to Namibia Meteorological Services, these scorching conditions are expected to persist in the country’s interior for the remainder of this week and the next.

It was also predicted that Friday will not only be quite hot but also particularly windy in the country’s interior. The day is expected to start with a light southerly wind, which will progress into a fresh to strong south-westerly wind in some interior areas.

Namibia Meteorological Services further forecasted that the North will likely experience the brunt of the ongoing heatwave this weekend, while the South can expect slight cooling on Friday and Saturday before the heatwave continues over most of the interior next week. Fortunately, some northern areas will likely receive light rainfall on Friday and during this weekend.

Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that the north-eastern parts of the country, in particular, will likely see isolated thundershowers from Friday. Rundu was highlighted as one of the places in this area that can expect thundershowers on Friday as well as during the weekend.

However, the rain will not be limited to the north-eastern parts of the country only. A few other places from the North to the South can also expect rain during the rest of this week. According to Namibia Meteorological Services, these places include Ondangwa and Windhoek, which will likely experience rain showers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Keetmanshoop in the South was also highlighted as one of the places that can expect rain showers this weekend, most likely on Saturday.

While this weekend’s rainfall is expected to affect several regions, the rainfall recorded during the week so far was primarily focused on the North. For instance, Namibia Meteorological Services revealed that Ngoma, Ondangwa, and Oshakati received light rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday morning, recording 3 millimetres (mm), 2.6mm, and 1.2mm of rain during this period, respectively.

Amidst the unending heat that defined this week, the light rainfall in the North did not go unappreciated as some social media users turned to Facebook to share photos and messages expressing their gratitude for the rain. One such Facebook user is Sakaria Gumede Kandenge, who posted a photo of the rainfall in Ondangwa on Thursday, captioned, “Nice rain last night in Olukonda, Ondangwa, the rain season is officially here and that means the Mahangu farming cycle has also started.”
