JUST like the South, the eastern regions are also expected to experience heatwave conditions this Valentine’s Day.
According to Namibia Meteorological Services, in the East, Omaheke Region’s Gobabis and Buitepos are expected to see maximum temperatures of 38°C today. However, the most intense heatwave is anticipated in the Southern areas, with Keetmanshoop in the //Kharas Region expected to reach temperatures as high as 40°C, and Mariental in the Hardap Region expecting a maximum temperature of 42°C.
Initially, Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that the heatwave in the South would end today. However, this forecast has been revised, and they now foresee the Southern region remaining extremely hot until tomorrow (Thursday).
In contrast with the South, the North-west can expect a few thundershowers today. This area has been witnessing consistent rainfall over the last few weeks. In fact, Kunene Region’s Okangwati and Khorixas recorded 22.3 millimetres (mm) and 8.7mm of rain respectively between Monday and Tuesday morning alone. The continuous rainfall in this area has even led to a rejuvenation of the rivers, as depicted in a video shared by Facebook user Lien le Grange showcasing the revitalised flow of the Hoarusib River.
However, the North-western parts of the country are not the only areas touched by the rain at the start of this week. Namibia Meteorological Services revealed that Oshaambelo in the Omusati Region and Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region also saw decent rainfall, recording 6mm and 12mm of rain, respectively, between Monday and Tuesday morning.
Beyond the northern regions, the Otjozondjupa Region also experienced some rainfall. Anker, Kanovlei, Otjiwarongo, and Otavi recorded 22mm, 10mm, 3.2mm, and 2.8mm of rain, respectively, between Monday and Tuesday morning. Various photos of the rainfall in Otjozondjupa Region’s Okahandja have also been circulating online.
Overall, numerous areas in the Otjozondjupa Region have consistently received rainfall in recent weeks. The impact of the rain in this region was also highlighted by Facebook user Hakkies Husselman, who recently shared a video depicting the picturesque flow of the river along the Cross Barmen Road near Okahandja.
