The Information and Communication Technology Minister, Dr Peya Mushelenga, stressed that the role of the media as the fourth pillar of democracy is indisputable while reminding members of the fourth estate about the importance of responsible journalism.
The minister and his executive team engaged the public and private media houses in the capital.
“You are not just news reporters, but you are custodians of truth, the public relies on your ability to present facts accurately, verify information rigorously, and maintain high ethical standards.”
Dr Mushelenga touched on the change in realities brought forth by the changing digital age, where information travels across borders instantly.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration among stakeholders.
“We should, as we must, work together to rise above sensationalism, yellow journalism, and exploitative journalism, we must endeavour to be truthful and promote accuracy above profit.”
He said the government is cognizant of the role the media plays in holding public office bearers accountable, reiterating that the government will continue to safeguard and uphold press freedom, protect the rights of journalists, and ensure their safety.
