The Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Emma Theofelus, has urged ICT stakeholders not to work in isolation but to collaborate with the government to address sector challenges and accelerate service delivery.
Speaking at an ICT stakeholder engagement, the Minister emphasised the need for cooperation to advance the sector and highlighted key government initiatives, including cybersecurity strategy, digital infrastructure, and policies like the Data Protection Bill and National Digital Strategy.
Discussions focused on issues such as the lack of an ICT professional body, the digital divide, and outdated legislation, with a call for actionable solutions to create a more resilient and thriving ICT ecosystem.
“I would like to single out those who are in business in this sector; let us talk about what can be done to grow the industry to create much-needed employment in this country. I am aware that sometimes entrepreneurs just require as little as verbal government support to tap into new markets, and we at MICT are ready to help you in that regard, recognising the fact that creating an enabling environment does not always require budget but more collaboration. I am aware that some of you may be new to this platform; we are doing our best to ensure that everyone is included and all voices are heard. Please be at liberty to suggest to the secretariat if any other players should have been present and that will enrich our conversations going forward to ensure that they are involved in the next steps moving forward.”
Attendees discussed concerns and shared their views on connectivity, ICT infrastructure, and key trends and developments that will influence the future of the ICT sector.
The recommendations from the platform will be prioritised to align with national development goals to create a strong agenda that harnesses technology to drive economic growth, enhance service delivery, and ultimately improve the lives of citizens.
