AUDRIN Mathe, the Information Executive Director of Namibia, emphasized the importance of treating information as a public good.
He made these remarks at the International Festival of Freedom of Expression and the Press in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. This festival recognizes the fundamental human rights of freedom of expression and press freedom, drawing delegates and dignitaries from around the world.
Mathe’s speech called for a concerted effort to strengthen journalism, promote transparency, and empower individuals, all while ensuring that no one is left behind in the information age. He stressed the pivotal role that open and unrestricted access to information plays in maintaining a healthy democracy and ensuring citizens’ rights to express themselves freely.
Namibia’s commitment to open communication and a free press was also a focal point of Mathe’s address. He highlighted the country’s remarkable achievements in this regard, citing the pivotal role it has played in bolstering democracy and setting an exemplary model for other nations to follow.
Recently, Namibia’s exemplary stance on media freedom has positioned it as a leading nation in Africa, ranking 22nd globally in the press freedom index. The country’s dedication to fostering a free and open press has not only empowered its citizens but has also garnered international recognition.
