The Kavango West Regional Council has taken the initiative to empower its communities through diverse development programmes.

In an attempt to eradicate hunger and poverty in the region, the Kavango West Regional Council remains committed to enhancing the lives of its residents through various community projects.

These include crop cultivation, poultry, livestock farming, horticulture, and woodcarving.

The Deputy Director of Planning and Development at the Kavango West Regional Council, Karl Kangondo, elaborates that “you could see there is also one of the successful projects that is inland horticulture, which we have been embarking upon. Now, if we come again within the Mankumpi constituency, you will find that in Endjovu there is a wood carving project, and the community is doing very well in that particular project. You can see, in terms of sustainability up until now, that the project is flourishing. Basically, if we still come to another programme that they usually call a support resource for rural farmers.”

Despite the effort to make a positive impact on community development projects, only some are flourishing. A few have completely failed due to mismanagement and a lack of cooperation among group members.

The Council has a plan to construct open markets in various areas where community members can sell their products.

“In terms of horticulture, sometimes they produce more, then they do not have access to the market. Either they have to travel long distances, or now we say, What can we do? Let us formalise it, and then we will construct one marketplace at Marema. Then, now that we found there is a group of women selling at Sikondo, just opposite the green scheme, we agreed as a council to build one there. There is also one market we constructed at Masini. That one is to Carter for the one group that we call the Ezazu wood caving project.”
