Learners who fail need support, not criticism-Social Worker

The announcement of exam results is a joyous occasion for many learners, however, others are forced to stare failure in the face.

A local social worker says that even though parents and guardians might be disappointed, they should resist the urge to punish those who have failed.

The announcement of exam results. It’s a sweet moment for some and a bitter reality for others.

Rundu-based social worker Berthiliah Simbaranda-Vistor says the last thing a learner who has failed needs is to be kicked while they are already down.

Simbaranda Vistor talks about how some families behave after discovering that their children flunked their exams.

The social worker says parents and guardians should therefore assist the poor-performing learner with picking up the pieces.

The experts say that, at the end of the day, failing one’s exams is not the end of the world.

The Acting Education Director in the Kavango East Region, Christine Shilima, says, “When one speaks, when one hears the word, fail, what comes into your mind is that my future is in the darkness. It is not the case. It’s just that you did not meet the requirement of entering a higher learning institution, and for one not to enter a higher learning institution does not mean that success is not for you.”
