GIDEON Wilhelm, a 53-year-old resident of Onamafipa village in the Etayi constituency of the Omusati Region, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in Outapi on Wednesday. He is accused of attempting to bribe a police officer.
Wilhelm was denied bail, and the case has been postponed to August 10th.
The incident of attempted bribery occurred around 12:00 on Tuesday when the accused allegedly offered N$20 000 to a police officer in exchange for the release of a Toyota Land Cruiser that was impounded by the police in 2020. The vehicle was suspected to have been involved in a case of theft of medicines from a health facility.
“The accused offered cash to a police officer in an attempt to release the exhibits,” said Commissioner Ismael Basson, the Omusati police regional commander.
According to Basson, Wilhelm is not the owner of the vehicle, and it is yet to be determined whether he acted on his own or in collaboration with the owner of the impounded Land Cruiser.
The cash has been seized as evidence.
