JOHANNES Tobias, aged 50, was found guilty of the murder of Miriam Block following a violent assault inside a shack located in Block E of Rehoboth.
The Angolan citizen who purportedly revealed to his neighbours about murdering his live-in girlfriend and even displayed the body to them was convicted of murder on Tuesday morning, despite subsequently denying the confession during his trial.
According to the court, Tobias murdered Block by stabbing her 11 times with a knife all over her body, resulting in her untimely death at the scene.
“On or about July 1, 2021, in or near Rehoboth in the District of Rehoboth, the accused unlawfully and intentionally killed Miriam Block, an adult female person.” After sufficient proof and conviction, the prosecutor general recommends a court punishment against the offender in accordance with the law.” The court observed.
During the trial, Thresia Pilukeni, a neighbour of the accused, gave her testimony stating that she had a close acquaintance with him as he used to reside with her. She recounted an incident on the specific night when Tobias approached her door and asked to speak with her. As she approached him, he revealed to her that he was tired and said that he was done. Curious about his statement and alarmed by his blood-stained and sandy appearance, she questioned him further. To her shock, he confessed to having murdered his partner and directed her to witness the gruesome scene firsthand.
The convicted murderer will be brought back to court on July 28, 2023, for a sentencing mitigation hearing at 10:00. He is currently remanded in custody pending his sentencing.
